Yang-tzu

(Short Biography)

Yang-tzu (also called Yang Chu or Yang-tzu Chu) seems to be from Wei.

Some consider him the disciple of Lao-tzu and place him in the period between the VII-th and VI-th century BC.

According to others, he lived before Mei Ti, during the V-th and the IV-th century BC, while others contend that he lived at the end of the IV-th and the beginning of the III-rd century, because his doctrine irritated Mencius, who seemed to have harshly criticized it.

The confusion about the period during which the wise man lived would prove that we face a character that had lived a very long time ago, before the period during which Chinese scholars used to note everything with proverbial scrupulosity.
