Tao-te ching Comments

Chapter 48

Quote

When we study diligently
We learn more and more
day by day.

When we follow the Path
we gradually become poorer day by day
Until nothing remains unfulfilled.

The empire is offered to the one who is not restless.
The one who is restless
is not able to obtain it.
(Translation from French version of Ma Kou)

Commentary

The one who follows the Path (Tao) does not accumulate anything intellectually. On the contrary, he becomes poorer from this (intellectual) point of view because he gives up prejudices and false intellectual considerations.

Variant: the one who wants to follow the Path must be intellectually empty. Knowledge (about the Path) does'nt lead him/her to the Tao.

The empire (i.e. the world, everything) is given to the one who is not restless - the one who is restless obtains nothing.
